A Prior Claim
to the Important Novelty:
N. McDonald – F. Kwiatkowski, Hastings (open) 2001/02
After seeing the voting for the Most Important Theoretical Novelty of the Volume

in Ju. Polgar – Gelfand, Budapest 2003 – 87/132 (ranked 9th
in the novelties poll). Full story with Mr. Kwiatkowski’s original game commentary

Informant 88 has just been released, and we already have a preview from CI 89!
Shredder’s Round 1 win against later disqualified List brought back memories
of great Morphy’s masterpieces: bishop sacrifice left White king’s castle
in ruins, thus giving Black all the time in the world to cut off his opponent’s
escape routes. Round 2 brought Deep Junior’s out-of-the-blue pawn breakthrough
in the seemingly impenetrable position of the unsuspecting Parsos. Both
games feature moves which defy human logic, only to render us mortals speechless
when the depth and precision of the multiprocessor calculations begin to uncover
in front of our disbelieving eyes.
